Is Online Yoga For You?
Can I learn yoga online?
Online Yoga has always been a thing! I tapped into taking yoga online when I lived in rural West Virginia and ran a farm. I could practice online with yoga teachers in California. Now in 2022’ after the COVID pandemic, everything has moved online.
The pros to online yoga are that it takes away some of the common hindrances of practice. You can add it to your schedule whenever it works for you, and there is zero commuting time.
I often hear my students say they don’t “have the motivation” to practice in a room without a teacher's physical presence to hold them accountable. I understand. Have you heard the saying, “the way you do one thing is the way you do everything?” It makes me wonder if you have a hard time motivating with something like online yoga where else in your life is motivation difficult for you?
You can change that at any time. Learning how to roll out your mat and join an online yoga class teaches you that discipline is something you create and choose, it doesn’t come from outside of you. Even though the teacher’s voice is guiding you, you are showing up for you. Period. Establishing that resource of commitment within will only feed other areas of your life and serve you over time.
Are online yoga classes good?
Yes! Like any yoga teacher, online yoga classes and teachers are all different. What will be a deciding factor if an online class is good? There has to be great audio/sound, good lighting, and video so you can see the teacher. Like any service you subscribe to and show up for, you want to resonate with the teacher.
I would ask things like: “can I feel the teacher’s energy and presence even through video? Can I sense their passion and dedication to their yoga and practice? Do they inspire me to not only breathe and move with awareness but are they helping me live with integrity and presence in my life and be the best version of me?” To summarize, a good online class would be about quality in presentation and content.
